UCSF-UCLA WISe Collaborative
Advancing surgical wellbeing. Transforming surgical culture. Improving patient outcomes.
Surgeons face increasing demands—long hours, high-stakes environments, and growing administrative burden. The WISe collaborative brings together a community of clinicians, researchers, and leaders to develop and implement solutions that support sustainable, fulfilling surgical careers.
Why It Matters
Surgical practice is uniquely demanding. Persistent exposure to high pressure, long hours, and administrative strain has led to rising rates of burnout, reduced quality of life, and worsening mental and emotional health among surgeons.
These challenges don’t exist in isolation—they directly impact team dynamics, healthcare systems, and patient outcomes.
Improving wellbeing in surgery—through professional fulfillment, mental health support, and sustainable work practices—is essential to building a healthier surgical workforce and delivering better care.
